The House
What remains after fire and water have done their work.
arka, Sanskrit. The distilled essence of a living thing.
Chapter I
A city that smells of rain.
Kannauj sits on the banks of the Ganga in Uttar Pradesh, and it has been called the perfume city of India for as long as anyone remembers. Its distillers still work the way their families always have: flowers, earth or wood sealed in a copper deg over a slow wood fire, the vapour carried through a bamboo pipe into a bhapka of sandalwood oil, cooled in water.
The result is called attar. It is concentrated, alcohol-free and intimate. It does not fill a room. It stays with the person wearing it.
Kannauj attar carries a Geographical Indication from the Government of India, which protects the name and the place it comes from.
“Indian craft deserves to be the luxury, not the souvenir.”
The idea behind the house
Chapter II
Why a house.
Most of this craft reaches people in small glass bottles on a market shelf. The oils inside are often extraordinary. The way they are presented rarely is.
Arka House works with distillers who still use the deg and bhapka. We choose each oil by hand, compose it for modern skin, and finish it in Gurugram in flacons made to be kept on a dresser, not hidden in a drawer.
We call it a house because it is meant to grow. Perfume oils first, then home and ritual, each carrying the same quiet idea.
What we hold to
Slow over fast
We use the traditional method because nothing has improved on it. Oils rest until they are ready.
Close over loud
Our oils are made to be discovered by someone near you, not announced across a room.
Honest over perfect
Natural oils vary from batch to batch. We number each one so you always know what you hold.
